The one day a year it’s socially acceptable to dress as ridiculous, horrifying, or alluring as possible is unbelievably just around the corner. That’s right everyone, Halloween is here, and dressing up is not an option for high school students. Although Halloween is not a national holiday, it’s still a yearly celebration for many, and numerous amounts of people choose to celebrate it through select choices of wardrobe. Carved pumpkins, surplus amounts of candy, and warm apple cider are all great, but the most peculiar day of the year isn’t taken into full effect unless you’re dressed to impress.
However, high school students are not allowed to partake in the normal celebratory traditions of Halloween, which means no costumes during school hours. When it comes to the week of a rival football game, student dress code ranges from full on chicken suits to classic superhero attire, and these outfits are seen as completely normal. Yet, when it comes to dressing up on a national, even worldwide known event that has taken place for centuries, students are given the big fat no.
Since Halloween takes place on a Friday, the Wildcat football team will be at Northside, so the football players will be given no chance to dress up because the school isn’t permitting costumes. Not only the football boys, but the cheer team, dance team, and additional fans won’t be given the chance to continue this Halloween tradition. Sure the students are 16, 17, and 18 years old, but the spirit of Halloween is completely shut down when people are dressed in normal everyday outfits.
Students are locked inside a school for eight hours on one of the most celebrated days of the year, spicing up a normal school day just a little to celebrate Halloween should be encouraged not dismissed. Saying costumes aren’t acceptable at school during Halloween is like saying trick or treating is no longer an adequate custom for children. The heart and soul of the spookiest day of the year is completely crushed when the things that make the day so special are taken away from it.
The chance to be someone different is an opportunity given only once a year, and everyone should be allowed to take advantage of it. So, whether two, twelve, or twenty find a loophole this Halloween, the day of mystery and mischief deserves to be celebrated in the most stylish way.
