Students in Mr.Nokes’ AP Environmental science class presented their projects after several months of hard work and research. Students began thinking of an area of interest back in the last week of October. In November, they developed a design and outlined their experiment, followed by a pilot experiment.
“A week before Thanksgiving they were actually collecting their data and writing literature reviews,” said Mr. Charles Nokes.
After this, students analyzed their data and worked on a formal lab write up. Once the formal lab write up was complete and corrections were made, the students submitted their work, along with their literature review for a grade.
Starting second semester, students began looking at different ways to present their experiments to the scientific community.
“Specifically we studied the Cornell University Template,” said Mr.Nokes.
After this, they created a presentation board which was put on display in the lab.
“Students, when available, positioned themselves next to their presentation board to defend and answer questions,” Mr. Nokes said.
The research teams also created powerpoints which were presented in the seminar room. The presentations were attended by Dr.Shepherd and also filmed by HBWN.
Students spent hours of work putting together these powerpoints and presentation boards, all of which pertained to a wide spectrum of subjects.
“My project was on the NFL passer rating,” said senior Dalton Galloway, “The entire project took about 12-15 hours.”
Mr.Nokes was very happy to see the hard work and great effort that was put into the projects this year.
“I’ve been extremely pleased that as I have challenged students academically, they have risen to and exceeded that challenge,” he said. “Professionally its been very gratifying seeing our senior students working at the highest academic level. I would like to see a program like this continue and would like to provide the opportunity for students’ work to be seen by the greater Springdale and science community.”
