Track has started off on the right foot this year when senior Dino Andrade placed first in the 800 meter with a 2:1.3 time. Junior Sain Mathew placed second in the 200 and 400 meters. The 4 x 8 team placed second and the 4 x 4 team received first place with a 3:30.05 time. This season has been a season full of broken records.
“I know Sain broke the 200 and 400 meter for outdoor. The 4 x 8 relay team broke the outdoor as well. Those are the only ones I can remember,” said coach Wayne Hall.
The runners have practice every weekday and take the day after a meet to review footage from that meet and improve.
“We’ll sit in the dome room on Fridays and we’ll critique ourselves. Try to figure out why we missed that jump. What can we do to make our jumps better, our batons better,” said Coach Hall.
On Mondays the team has a mock meet to figure out who is best qualified to compete at the upcoming meet.
“I would run it just like a regular meet. They would still get scratches. They would still have a certain amount of jumps they would have at a normal meet,” said Coach Hall. “Whoever has the top three times or top four times, however many I can take, I would take the top four guys that places within our team.”
The runners participated in the Whitey-Smith Relays held at Rogers on March 28 and ended up placing seventh.
“We could’ve placed higher if the guys didn’t go to Texas,” said Coach Hall.
On the same day Mathew, Andrade, and sophomores Aaron Featherstone, Payton Powell, and Cameron Camp traveled to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Relays. The Texas Relays are held from March 27-30 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
“It’s like the second largest high school track meet in the United States,” said Hall. “There’s going to be 10,000 athletes and over 50,000 fans there. It’s supposed to be a big deal so our 4 x 4 team was fortunate enough to qualify. I think they’re going to do pretty well.”
