As junior Samantha Weber ran down the field after the soccer ball, she decided to go for a header. Going for the header, she got hit in the front and the back of the head, causing her to black out.
“Last Friday night I got a concussion. I don’t really remember anything that happened,” said Weber.
As the girls soccer team prepared for their game against Tulsa Union, one of the most difficult opponents, the biggest struggle brought before them was their loss of players due to injuries. Junior Makayla Wilson was out due to a torn MCL, sophomore Maddie Slayton was out due to an enlarged spleen, and Weber was out due to her concussion. Games are nerve racking enough with all the players healthy, so their loss of players adds to the pressure.
“We are really going to have to step it up at this game due to our loss of players, and yes, it will be more difficult but I know we can do it because we have really strong players,” said junior Ana Martinez.
While some were injured on the field, others injuries were unrelated to the game.
“I have an enlarged spleen, but I was not injured on the field and I am not allowed to play because if it gets hit, then it could rupture,” said Slayton.
To make up for the loss of players, the team had to move around a bit to make up for those who couldn’t play.
“Our coach had us practice different positions and have us move around just to try out different spots,” said sophomore Adeline Williams.
Although the girls lost the game 2-0, a lot of hard work was put in to overcome the hurdles they faced.
