The Lady Wildcat Softball team has had an exciting first few games. Currently they are 4-2 overall (1-1 in conference). The Lady Wildcats beat Bentonville at their field for the first time in Har-Ber history. Coach Lynn Lawson explained the victory- and the consequences that followed it.
“It was nice to seem them do that (beat Bentonville),” said Coach Lawson. “I think we were still celebrating our victory over Bentonville too much before we played Heritage.”
Heritage was Har-Ber’s first conference loss.
The game against Bentonville was before a victory the Wildcats gained against Gravett. For sophomore Morgan Neal, there’s a reason for the great start to the season.
“We had five freshmen start last year,” said Neal. “There’s five girls returning this year, so we’ve got a lot more experience than we did last year.”
Five starting freshmen means that Har-Ber can expect a successful few years of softball. Junior Kylie Buttram also observed a changed in the team which can account for the newfound success.
“We’re a close knit team,” explained Buttram. “We’re always there to pick each other up- something we failed at in years past.”
Although the Lady Wildcats have seen a positive change in the team, there’s always room for improvement as Buttram explains.
“We need to improve on consistency as well as our energy out on the field,” said Buttram.
Contrary to Buttram, Morgan Neal explained her belief in what the Wildcats needed to improve on.
“At the beginning of the year we didn’t really have chemistry,” said Neal. “We ate dinner before the Bentonville game, and we’ve been trying to have better chemistry and get along better.”
Buttram, and Coach Lawson both explained their anticipation for the rest of the season to come.
“I think we learned more from the loss against Heritage than the win against Bentonville,” explained Coach Lawson. “I’m anxious to see how they get off the bus and play Van Buren.”
“I expect to go further than we ever have before, and be one of the best teams in the 7a,” said Buttram.
