On the weekend of Feb. 22, the swim and dive team hit the road for Little Rock to compete at state with all the best schools in Arkansas. To begin, swim coach, Samantha Brown, was proud of the results, even though the Wildcats only sent five athletes to compete.
“I think they did really well,” said Miss Brown. “They ended up dropping time on both of their relays, and both of our individual qualifiers had great races.”
Senior Ethan Wilson shares Brown’s enthusiasm in the swim and dive team. Wilson competed in diving at state and is the school’s only diver. He seems very satisfied with his contributions to the team though he finished eighth out of 15.
“For only diving for four months, with no tumbling background or anything, I feel that I did really well,” said Wilson. “The points I scored diving brought us up two places, so I feel accomplished.”
Coach Brown, Wilson, and senior Corey Evans all agree that they are going to miss their adventures with the swim team.
“I’m going to miss the coaches and some people on the team,” said Wilson. “I had a huge learning experience this year from dive. It was something that was consistent all through high school, and without it I think high school wouldn’t have been as fun.”
Coach Brown admitted that she too will miss the seniors.
“It’s sad to see the seniors leave. It’s bitter-sweet,” said Brown. “We’ll be losing a lot of senior leadership, but it just means underclassmen will have to step it up!”
Finally, Evans will also miss the swim experience, but not in the same way that Wilson, and Brown will.
“It feels great,” said Evans, “but at the same time I don’t have to do a cardio workout anymore.”
