Performance Enhancing Drugs are making the news yet again. PEDs are substances used by athletes to improve their performances in the sports in which they engage.
In recent news one of the most admired American athletes, Lance Armstrong, admitted to using PEDs to improve his cycling. Yes, he had cancer, but that does not make it okay.
Armstrong sued countless numbers of people, so much so that when Oprah Winfrey asked him if he had sued his masseuse Emma O’reilly Armstrong said “to be honest Oprah, we sued so many people I don’t even know. I’m sure we did.”
He doesn’t even attempt to justify his actions. Sure he apologized, but that does not make everything he has done and lied about okay. He would become angry with those people who questioned his integrity. His entire career is full of all lies. According to the New York Times, Armstrong has been stripped of all seven Tour de France titles, and I believe the punishment was well deserved.
In more recent news Sports Illustrated has accused future hall of famer Ray Lewis for using deer antler spray. The spray is not a well-known PED, but it is banned in the National Football League. On Super Bowl media day, this was the hottest topic.
Lewis denied all allegations. Throughout the season, players are randomly drug tested in the NFL, and Lewis is yet to fail one test, according to Ravens Vice President of Communications Kevin Byrne. When asked about it, Lewis, with a smile on his face, said “two years ago, that was the same report. It’s not worthy of the press.”
In conclusion, it is disappointing to see this in modern day sports. Technology is doing its best to try to catch the people that use PEDs, but there all various PEDs that don’t show up on drug tests, such as deer antler spray.
