The projected one million dollar multipurpose facility is getting closer to being finished. Baldwin and Shell Construction Company broke ground and received the metal beam for the framework of the new facility last week.
“The steel beams are just now going up,” said assistant athletic director and football coach Chris Wood.
Covered entirely in turf, the field inside the multipurpose facility is 50 yards long and 60 yards wide. The field house should be completed around July 2012. It’s going to be the second multipurpose building because Springdale couldn’t hold all the programs. The other multipurpose facility in the district is located at Springdale High School.
“Considering we share a field with football, it’ll give us a ground that is level,” said soccer coach John Marshall.
The advantages of having a field house will truly become evident during the winter and spring seasons. The project, according Coach Wood, is because of the high student athlete usage, and also all the programs which benefit from the field house will greatly appreciate this new facility.
“In reality it’s truly a multi-purpose facility, in all the programs it serves,” said Coach Wood.
Sport programs that will benefit from this facility will be football, soccer, softball, baseball, and it’ll help track the most. Since track season falls around January the field house will be a perfect place for them to run and practice.
“We can go in there in cold or rainy weather,” said Coach Marshall.
At the moment teams share the outdoor field and many other programs just have to create a practice area.
“We share a field with the football team which we have to manage,” said Coach Marshall. “ Coach Wood does a good job at that.”
To manage the field the coaches make prior arrangements to organize when and who gets the field.
