Masquerade creates mystery
The idea of a masquerade prom is very intriguing.
Imagine everyone dressed in gorgeous gowns and tuxedos but their identities are hidden.
The night would be full of mystery and romance as people who would never approach others gain confidence in the false identity of the mask.
People who would never come out of their shells are dancing and having a fun night. No one knows who anyone is so no one is self-conscious.
At the end of the year it would be the perfect time to let everyone be free and have no fear of expressing who they are.
Finding that perfect masquerade mask that accents your dress just right will be the icing on the cake.
The guys can feel like Batman, hiding their secret identities under the mystery of the mask.
Ask out the person of your dreams no fear that night. It may be the last chance to let them know if you’re a senior.
Romance springs to life as people in different social groups dance together, not worrying about who the other may be. People who would have never noticed each other are dancing and having the time of their lives getting to know one another without worrying about making a fool of themselves.
The mask adds a layer of protection to the people who are shy and socially awkward. They can let their personalities shine, as their identities don’t hold them back.
After the dance people piece together the identities of their dance partners and previous assumptions of them are erased. The anxiety of trying to find out your partners identity fills the air. Names can be exchanged and the surprise on people’s faces will be priceless as they figure out who their dance partner has been all along.
New couples walk down the hall, remembering the night of romance and mystery.
Masking potential dangers
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been looking for prom dresses for my senior prom since I was a freshman. Now, I’ve narrowed my dress selection to just a select few, I wait for the announcement of our prom theme so that I can pick a dress accordingly.
After months of waiting and anticipating what my eyes would feast upon the moment I walked into the prom venue, my soul was crushed by the announcement that our prom theme was a Masquerade. What is up with that?
Let me explain what I see when I hear anything with the word masquerade in it.
I see old creepy guys sitting in corners, smoking smelly cigars with all black masks, bidding on all the girls who catch their eyes, calling dibs on who they’re going make their prey for the night, as if the girls were prostitutes.
I see random sword fights breaking out on the dance floor and body parts flying everywhere. The most disturbing vision I get in my head is when I see Christine ripping off the phatom’s mask in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, revealing his tattered face.
You see, nothing good can come of this prom theme. Think about it faculty members, between people showing up intoxicated in our past proms, do you really trust us students in a dimly lit room, with loud music, and distracting masks, making it impossible to identify the suspect or the victim? Us kids cannot be trusted.
Okay, let me pull the curtains on my dramatics for a second to tell you the real reason I don’t want our prom theme to be a masquerade.
I don’t have a dress or mask to match the occasion for starters. Secondly, Springdale had the same theme just last year and due to our long history of rivalry, do we really want to add more fuel to their hate fire? Lastly, a masquerade themed prom is so unoriginal and absolutely boring!
People say that there aren’t many ways to have an original theme when it comes to prom, but I say they’re dead wrong. We could have a Back to the Future, themed prom, or a Famous Couples of the 90’s themed prom. We could even have a Go-Green themed prom. It’s all about the imagination, which I feel the student councils seriously lack.
