It’s that time again. Everything is in place, and I begin to prepare myself for my next show. Clearing my throat, I take a moment to make sure my vocal chords are ready to perform. Hearing the beginning beat of the song, I take a deep breath. And then the show begins.
Driving down the street, I begin to belt whatever song is currently playing at the top of my lungs. My head begins to bob to the beat, my foot not on the gas taps along to the thumping of
the drums, keeping in time with the knocking of my fingers against my steering wheel.
I’m sure I’ve been on the receiving end of plenty of weird stares as fellow drivers question my movements. I look like I have no control of my body, especially when pulling up to a stoplight. I begin flailing around like a fish out of water, dancing as well as I can without activating the menacing child lock on my seat belt.
I don’t care about the other people around me though, they are probably just jealous that I’m performing my own concert, while they sit and listen to Beethoven’s “5 Symphony” on repeat.
What really makes my day is pulling up next to someone, and seeing them singing to the song on the radio. Witnessing someone experience pure joy, jamming away to his or her favorite song is something that will always make me smile.
The concentrated look covering someone’s face as they attempt to do their best Mariah Carey impersonation to whatever melody is blasting is one of most enjoyable things to observe.
I think I love it so much because I can relate. The smile that breaks out on your face when one song ends, only to play the beats of the next is one of the best pleasures of life. You’re in your element, your zone, where the outside world is simply a fly on the wall and you are the only thing that matters.
It’s made me realize how important it is to enjoy the little things in life. As we grow older, life begins to pass at the speed of light, and the minute things in life that bring us complete happiness are pushed to the back burner. Focusing on the negatives of our lives causes us to forget to pause and enjoy the positives that we have.
I think it’s important to find the little things in life that make you happy. Those are the things that will keep you sane.
