When I think of spirit week, I think of hallways full of funny costumes and laughter. I think of the school looking like some type of dysfunctional family dressed different but alike in a way that only we understand. In my mind I see kids and teachers joining in on a laugh of a common issue. I see a union of smiles and memories combined in a week.
Unfortunately the reality of the Har-Ber’s spirit week doesn’t match the cookie cutter Hal-Mark image I have envisioned in my mind. Our spirit week instead, is full of snickers and snippy comments about the people who actually choose to dress up and participate in the festivities.
Some people choose to blame the fact that the student council picks pretty crappy themes as the reason they don’t participate, but you know what I think?
I think that is not only the crappiest excuse I’ve ever heard, but some people are too full of themselves and so concerned about what their peers are going to think of them, that they’d rather sit on the sideline criticizing the people who actually take part in the activities, while secretly wishing it were them laughing and having fun, than be judged by hypocritical, stuck up, boring, snobs.
I’m not sorry if that came out offensive to anyone who feels it was directed towards them, cause chances are it was! The whole point of spirit week is for everyone to put aside their differences and there pride to join together as a school and celebrate an occasion.
Who cares if that means dressing up as a member of the Duck Dynasty clan, or a nerd whose pant are hiked up to heaven, or even a hillbilly with two front teeth. If it means showing pride for and of your school, you should freaking do it!
If you’re not going to make an effort to participate, no matter how lame you may think it is, then you have no right to complain. Last time I checked, sitting around dogging on the people who come up with the themes for spirit week or the person who’s over student council, isn’t showing much school spirit either. Hypocrites.
