There are a plethora of things I do not properly understand in the world: women, “Big Bang Theory” (the tv show), foot fetishes. I also don’t understand anime.
Anime is a style of animation popularized (and still very popular) in Japan. Anime is dominantly displayed on tv, and many Anime shows are brought to the good ol’ U.S. of A.
For example, Dragonball Z, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh were brought to the US, given an English spoken voice-over and aired Cartoon Network or other means of watching weird tv.
I can’t really explain why I don’t understand it, because if I understood why I don’t understand it, I’d probably understand it a little better than I currently do. This may not be very open minded of me, but I find it bizarre.
A large population of quirky kids in the U.S. have a passionate love for anime. I guess I just don’t see the appeal. For one, the shows are filmed with the characters speaking Japanese with an English voice-over, so every episode is be oddly paced and off balance.
I imagine it’d be similar to if you watched the old Godzilla films (which, honestly I’ve loved since a young age.) The actor says the words which are miserably covered with English, and his mouth keeps moving after the sentence is heard.
The poor dialogue-to-words ratio is something I really enjoy about Godzilla films. I enjoy them because they are silly, and they make me laugh. So I don’t understand how someone can constantly watch a tv show with dialogue similar to Godzilla and actually be able to look past it and enjoy the show as a whole.
To me, it just sounds like a bunch of tom foolery. Maybe one day someone will pivot me 180 degrees and make me enjoy Anime. Until then, I’m just a confused, ignorant teenager.
