African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Marshallese, women, and homosexuals as well as many other groups and races are all minorities within the United States.
All to often anytime something bad happens to a member of a minority, their bad fortune is blamed on “what they are” rather than who they are. I am considered part of a “minority” because I am a woman. I will never blame something that happens to me on the fact that I am a female. I believe that I can do anything I put my mind to. Being female is not an excuse.
Sadly, many students their minority status as an excuse to help them get through life.
I get so mad when a member of a minority comes out of a situation mad at the world because he or she didn’t get a job or because someone didn’t like him or her and blame it on the fact that he or she is a minority.
It isn’t always your skin color, sex, or sexual orientation that keeps you from getting what you want. It could also be because of your bad attitude, the fact that you can’t own up to what you have done wrong or because you simply don’t deserve it.
I understand that people are treated unfairly sometimes and do face difficulties from day to day because of how they look or “what they are.” But I also believe that people need to start owning up to the fact that they don’t always put forth their best effort, that they are not always the best person for the job, or they just don’t deserve what they are after.
