Pushing the #87 button to start the gas pump, I watch in disappointment as the amount for my few meager gallons of gas rises at a startling rate.
In the past few weeks gas has steadily risen to around $3.62 per gallon. In less than a month, gas prices have gone up almost an entire dollar. Well, that grinds my gears so much. Many Americans throughout the country work extremely hard to get their paychecks each month, and now a large amount of it is being used to fill up their cars.
It is astounding just how much gas prices fluctuate within a small time period. According to RealClearEnergy.org, the U.S. gets the majority of its oil from Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Africa. I believe that the U.S needs to find a way to become completely independent with oil.
Companies have created electric cars and a few cars that can run on different fuel sources, but those cars are immensely overpriced! There is no way for an average American to afford a $100,000 car.
To make matters even better, at his State of the Union address, President Obama talked about raising the minimum wage to $9 per hour. Now that sounds wonderful for people who are working for the current minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which are mostly high school students like you and me.
In the long run, this is going to do more damage than good. Companies will have to pay more to their employees, which will especially hurt the smaller companies. In response, those companies will have to fire workers in order to save money. More jobs will be lost than helped.
I want to go back to under $3 gas please. I’m tired of forking out over $40 every time I go to fill up. The government needs to come up with a more affordable way for average Americans to afford these alternative vehicles. When that finally happens, the world will be much better place.
