“Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo? “I am lost. I mean I am literally lost. I have never been to this part of the airport before.”
On Feb. 1, 2013 this post-apocalyptic film from the point of view of the ravaged zombie population of the city was released to the long awaited public. Isaac Mariah originally wrote this Canadian paranormal romantic zombie comedy and while there were a few variances between book and movie, it was only in the spirit of keeping with the genre. No matter how specific and new.
In this wickedly twisted spin on a zombie “Romeo and Juliet,” the young main character “R” who is played by the absolutely smashing Nicholas Hoult is in an undead state. When the co-star Julie played by the beautifully stunning Teresa Palmer goes into the zombie infested city for hospital supplies they meet and he saves her after eating her boyfriend, his first step from the hardened path of the killer and toward excavation.
On their road, R is trying to win her as they begin to realize his dead black heart has begun to beat once more and this new kind of sickness is beginning to spread.
Although these actors fantastically represent the characters, my favorite character still has to be “M” or Marcus. His best and most famous line being “B!#$hes man.” He is R’s only almost friend. His few lines of dialog portray him as a total boss!
But back to the main characters, with R’s nimble mind but outward demeanor being nothing more than grunts, groans, or monosyllabic responses and his constant worrying about what she thinks about him is a metaphor for love struck adolescences.
Overall I give this movie a 4.5 stars out of 5 because it was simply extraordinary. With all the novelty of a zombie star, the laughter invoked by the original characters, and sweet feelings surging by this hard won love.
