Winning America’s Next Top Model or the Nobel Peace Prize?
It isn’t really much of a contest in my mind. Brains over Beauty right?
Diving into Lisa Bloom’s Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World, I’ve begun to ask myself, why is it becoming such a competition?
In her book, Bloom delves into this very topic. She talks about how girls in today’s society would prefer to be a model or a reality show star than a celebrated intellectual being.
At first I thought she was crazy! Why wouldn’t someone want to be praised for being smart? Am I foolish to think that a college degree is more important than a modeling or acting contract?
I’m not knocking being a knockout. But when did it become the sole focus of being a girl?
I hear it in the halls all the time. An attractive girl walks by and that’s when the zoo comes to town.
“Man, that girl is hot!” *que wolf whistle*
I hear guys talk among themselves about the looks of the girl. Most fail to look beyond the exterior and examine the personality and intellect of the girl. It’s great if someone is gorgeous, but if she doesn’t know that Connecticut is a state or can’t name six U.S presidents, that’s when we have a problem.
Think about some of the amazing women in our country such as Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, or Condoleezza Rice. These passionate professionals have done their fair share for our nation, but are often overshadowed in the media by the likes of Snookie and Honey Boo Boo.
What a wonderful way to recognize their hard work.
*insert sarcasm*
As I sit and listen to all of the hype about football season and homecoming, I can’t help but wonder if I’ve been transported to the Jersey Shore. While it is all part of the high school experience, those aren’t the only things to worry about.
Our focus should be on working hard in class, getting college credit, and preparing for the ACT and SAT, not to mention the big bad wolf that is college.
When I was younger, I was embarrassed when people would comment on my intelligence. Then I woke up one day and realized that there is nothing wrong with being smart. So come on ladies, it’s time to trade in the eyeliner for a #2. It’s time to take pride in being smart and put our brains to work for the whole world to see.
