In all honesty, you can’t sit down and watch TV for a full 30 minutes without seeing multiple commercials: asking you to donate some odd number of money to varying foundations. Donating is a fantastic thing, and donating your money to help someone else is an extremely selfless thing to do. But what if your money isn’t going where you think it is?
I completely support what the different foundations are doing, and I personally love seeing people put others before themselves for a change. However, I think there should be some sort of way of tracking their money in order to know that it’s going to the right things. For example, stopping Joseph Koney in Uganda has become a major focus all across America. People are sending in donations from all around the world, but what exactly is their money being put towards?
Are supporters getting posters, billboards, and T-shirts, or is it being used to directly fund the cause and help send troops to South Africa? Those in charge of the foundations should inform their donors of what exactly is going on. They should keep them updated and give them specifics as to what their money is contributing to.
While driving to school each morning, I always listen to KLRC. Recently, they created a fundraiser in order to raise money to rescue young girls caught in human trafficking. At nearly every commercial break they would re-introduce the situation and ask for people to donate. But they did something that not every foundation does; they sent each donator a hand made bracelet made by the young girls, as well as information about the girl they were trying to help.
That alone is so reassuring compared to some situations where you give money and never hear anything back about it again. I’m not saying people should stop donating. I just think that they deserve to receive information regarding the cause in which they are giving to. Do a bit of research before sending off your hard-earned dime.
