Just the mere thought of every student and individual being on the same level academically is nothing short of unrealistic. Especially when that level of expectancy is proficient.
The goverment expects a certain amount of students to score proficient on the literacy exam, and that number is supposed to increase each year. Not to mention that students who have lived in this country for a limited amount of time are taking the exact same exam as students who have lived here their entire life and speak English as their primary language.
I believe that no two students learn curriculum the exact same. Some visual; some verbal, just to name the most common methods. While I was growing up, I was always thought that everyone was different, and that it’s a good thing. But then they test us as if we should all be identical.
I disagree with looking at exam scores to determine how smart or “advanced” a child is.
I do not think an exam is a true test of a person’s knowledge. You could slap an exam down in front of the brightest student and still receive poor results, but that does not mean the score reflects the student. Every single person’s brain functions differently.
We provide an education for every single individual regardless of the circumstances. Yet, we are being compared to other countries such as Japan and China who only educate their most advanced individuals. Not only do I find the “No Child Left Behind” act completely but also degrading to the teachers and students.
