Friendship. What is it? What does it take to consider someone a friend? Do you just have to talk to them every once in a while or is it knowing someone on a deeper level? What makes someone your friend?
Merriam-Webster online dictionary says that friendship is a state of being friends and that a friend is someone who is not hostile. So according to them friendship is not being enemies with a person. If thats the case, then I have a lot of friends, many that I don’t even know. But is that what friendship really is?
I think that having a friendship with someone is knowing at least something about them and them knowing something about you. Even if it’s something as little as your favorite color or anything like that. Knowing something personal about somebody is what really makes you friends.
But being someone’s best friend is totally different. If you consider someone your best friend, they should know you inside and out and you should know them that well too.
I’ve recently been put in a situation where I have to question whether I’m still best friends with someone. Being put in this situation really has made me think about what a friendship really is. Just because you might say hi to someone in the hallway but never have any other contact with them doesn’t mean your friends.
Growing apart is okay too. Just because you were best friends once doesn’t mean you always have to be. You might still consider them your friend. You just might not be as close as you once were.
I’m trying to continue being friends with my best friend, and trying to work back to what we were. Going through this really makes you think about friendship and what really matters to you.
