Lately at Friday night football games, a special appearance has been made by the mascot, Wallace the Wildcat. These past few Fridays, students and teachers have had to rush around to find someone to play the role for the night. This shouldn’t be a hassle; it should be a fun activity for those involved.
With each game, comes a new person to take on the role of Wallace. I think this method of choosing the mascot needs to be fixed. Basketball season is already here and there still isn’t a set mascot. Although the mascot didn’t even appear until the end of football season, I would think that the problem would get fixed now instead of waiting until next year.
In order to choose the mascot, there should be a tryout held for any student interested in being Wallace. The students should have to show why they think they would be the person for the job. Since the current Wallace, or Wallaces, have been last minute fill-ins, they haven’t had a chance to practice or even get the hang of getting people fired up.
If there was one person chosen to fill the role, then there would be less confusion, and more time for the mascot to practice.
The mascot should be more involved with the entire school. Not only should Wallace be at football games, but basketball games, pep rallies, and other sporting events. The standard of Wallace the Wildcat needs to be raised. The random people being asked to do it can’t do the job justice, nor do they have the time to understand how to do the job right.
