The goal of educators is to prepare students for the real world. As high schoolers, students want to learn while having as much free time as possible. Switching to a four period a day block schedule would not only give students more time to study and understand individual subects, but it would prepare them for the future by giving them a more college-like schedule.
A block schedule would include four periods a day; two electives and two core classes. Athletic teams would not be considered a class. Teams would have to pratice before or after school. Students would then be able to focus on academics during school hours; not sports. It would also give students the opportunity to take more classes, instead of spending electives on sports.
Classes would be an hour and thirty minutes long. Teachers would then have time to thouroughly explain subjects and give students a better chance to grasp concepts. There would be four classes a semester and they would be equivilent to a year long fifty minute class. Students could take more classes, while learning the same amount of curriculum.
Schools push students to further their educations by going to college, so wouldn’t it be helpful for them to have a more college-like schedule? Most colege schedules have four classes a day that are one and a half to two and a half hours long, not seven classes a day that are only fifty minutes.
Schools should focus on the needs of students as much as possible. The schedule should prepare students for the future and should allow them to take as many classes as possible, not limit the amount of class time and hold kids back from being prepared for the next level of learning.
