When a school is established, a name, logo, mascot, colors, an alma mater, and a fight song are created for the school individually.
The “score” or the tune for the song, but yet undecided on the lyrics. This year, after 10 years, the student council has taken it on to find lyrics for our student body to sing when our song plays. “I just became the STUCO (Student Council) sponsor this year and that was one of the first things the members asked me about,” said Mrs. Rachel-Claire Cockrell
Every time a touchdown is scored, or make any points in a game where the band attends, the fight song is played. The song is played at pep rallies and most school wide events. You could notice in the past 10 years the student section, student body and many teachers swaying or dancing along, but they are not singing. “We decided as a council that because this is Har-Ber’s tenth year, it would be a way to look back on those years,” said senior Peyton Wood
Student Council decided that they wanted students, teachers, and anyone else who’s interested to be able to submit their own song lyrics for consideration.
The song was placed as an attachment on the website so that viewers may click on it to hear the tune. Once they had written their lyrics, they were then emailed to [email protected].
The deadline was Monday, Sept. 29. Once all applicants sent in their personal lyrics, a meeting was called the next Tuesday, Sept. 30.
“It will be up to a panel of seniors involved in choir, band, and sports. Every group of students in this school is represented,”said Wood. After a meeting was held, each set of lyrics was rated on a 1-10 scale.
“We narrowed it down to four finalist and we sent it to Mr. Irwin and Mr. Ford to make sure it matched the music. They wanted to be involved with it because they do the music,” said Cockrell.
Once a finalist is chosen, the student council will decide on the best way to share the song with the student body.
The idea of a flash mob before lunch or during activity hour in the rotunda has been thrown about. Student Council would sing the song as a way for not only teachers, but the entire school to learn the lyrics and sing along. A definite plan has not been set.
