Teachers can now pay money to secure and customize a parking of their choice. While this may offer teachers a shorter jaunt into the school, there is controversy pertaining to the idea itself.
Ms. Oliver was the teacher that came up with the idea of teachers paying for parking spots. “I am part of Har-Ber’s 10 Year Celebration Committee. We thought it would be a great way to raise money for the events we are planning,” Ms. Oliver said.
Teachers are not required to pay for a spot, as they can continue with their everyday routines. “Teachers do not have to take part. There will still be parking for them on campus, if they don’t purchase a spot,” Ms. Oliver said.
Mr. Stewart is one of the teachers who is has chosen not to participate. “I get here at 7:15 every morning and the parking lot is empty, so I park where I want,” Mr. Stewart said.
Even though Mr. Stewart is not participating, he is still supportive of the cause of the fundraiser. “It’s great that they are using it as a fundraiser, and I hope they raise a ton of money,” Mr. Stewart said.
Even though this is optional, some teachers don’t agree with the idea. “Teachers have voiced to me and others their complaints about this fundraiser,” Ms. Oliver said.
One teacher refused to express an opinion due to the fact that no positive words would be spoken on the matter.
Another concern about this new rule is vandalism.
“I definitely think that teacher’s cars will be vandalized. There are those students that will vandalize their least favorite teacher’s car. It is inevitable.” Matthew Seiter said.
