With arms draped around her fellow classmates, senior Kennedy Channel belts out words to the latest hits on the radio, and currently her favorite, Dark Horse by Katy Perry. The atmosphere is light and filled with laughter. Surrounded around people who don’t care where you are from, who you are, or what you’ve done, Channel has found peace here. Everything about this place was different, yet wonderful. This is crazy. This is fun. This is blissful. This is freedom. This is Young Life.
Young Life is an organization that reaches out to every high school student and gives them the “opportunity to meet Jesus Christ and follow Him”, according to Young Life’s official website.
“Young Life is an organization whose purpose is to teach teenagers about Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith, but in a non-traditional way,” said Channel. Young Life is an international organization, which focus solely on reaching the teenagers of the world.
Young Life is ran by a group of college students who desire to make a different in the local high schools, and to continue the organization that changed their lives in high school.
After years of planning, the Wildcats finally got a Young Life to call their own. Last spring was the birth of Har-Ber Young Life.
But what happens at Young Life that isn’t considered traditional?
“Every week ‘clubs’ meet in peoples’ houses to sing songs, play crazy games, be loud, make great friendship, and learn about Jesus,” said Channel.
Senior Caylee Ford describes Young Life as, “the night we just kind of chill out and have fun.” Young Life is an opportunity to break out of their shells, and have fun.
“The purpose of Young Life is to pull kids into a more relax church setting,” said Ford.
Sophomore Natalie Lucas discovered that Young Life was more than just learning about Jesus, it was a great way to be able to find a community of students who build each other up, and encourage each other.
“YL has made me really feel apart of the Har-Ber Wildcat family,” said Lucas. “Also just a place where I can be silly and be myself with friends.”
Har-Ber Young Life encourages classmates to come together and enjoy each other’s presence.
“The location changes from time to time, but we usually hold it at a Young Life kid’s house,” said Ford. “You pretty much just show up to club, or you can talk to someone that already goes. It’s really simple to get involved.”
Har-Ber Young Life is every Monday at 7:27. To get more information about Young Life, find them on twitter, instagram and Facebook page.
“All you need is to just bring yourself!” said Ford.
