Students began to flood into the dome room. Senior Stephen Burns made his way into a seat.
He knew Pittsburg State University was the college for him, yet he didn’t realize all the opportunities that they had that will help him in the fall.
“I learned a lot about certain opportunities I wouldn’t have learned about,” said Burns.
Pittsburg offers tons of scholarships for future freshman. One of their scholarships is an Academic Achievement Award where students will receive $500-$1,200. Another scholarship offer that the school gives is the Diversity Scholarship, which can offer up to $1,000. Theses are only a couple of scholarship opportunity.
“I’m so far going on 3 scholarships, but not all the scholarships are finished,” said Senior Caleb King.
Pittsburg offers a lot of opportunities, yet their department of engineering technology has captured the hearts of a lot of Construction Management and Plumbing teacher Stowe Hoffius’ students.
“[They] came to promote the programs at Pitt and the construction industry in general to get young people involved,” said Burns.
The school of Construction “focus on modern, professional construction technologies such as computer estimating and scheduling, digital layout using laser/GPS/robotic equipment through the use of real-world construction laboratories” according to Pittsburg State University official website.
Not only does the school provide their students with information of all the equipment and techniques, they stress safety.
“Safety in the workplace is more crucial than ever,” said the official website of Pittsburg State University. The school offers course in Environmental and Safety Management, Safety, Health and Environment Management.
“I’m majoring in construction engineering,” said Kings. “When the head of construction department came, he spoke to us about the different classes and majors that they have under the school of technology.”
Some of the educational objectives and outcomes, according to Pittsburg State University’s official website, are “graduates will have effective verbal, non-verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to support their role in industry,” and “students will demonstrate an ability to apply creativity in the design of construction systems, components, or processes.” Theses are only two of 13 objectives and outcome that Pittsburg State University holds dear to their hearts.
“When we went and visited the school, you could tell that they care a lot about their students and want the absolute best,” said Burns, “I think that’s why I like the school so much.”
Not only does the school offers the ability to educate their students minds, yet they are “frequently posting information on specific job opportunities and internship,” according to their website. This allows students to be bale to put what they learn into practice.
Along with that, there are many different program-related organizations that students are able to participate in.
Some of the programs include Associated General contractors (AGC) Student Chapter, Mechanical Contractors of America, National Association of Home Builders, and American Society of Safety Engineers Students Chapter.
“Everyone is friendly and all the professors go on first name bases which makes everyone feel more connected,” said King.
With an environment filled with friendly people, amazing opportunities, and the chance to go far, Pittsburg has made a home in some of the student’s hearts.
“I am so excited for next year and to see what lays ahead of me there,” said Burns.
