Twenty-two year old American slope-style Gus Kenworthy is staying in Sochi, Russia, until the paperwork that will allow him to adopt and take home four puppies and their mother is completed.
He was originally scheduled to return home February 17, but he decided to stay until he can bring the dogs with him.
“I think it’s really great, what Gus Kenworthy did, adopting those dogs,” said junior Tanner Collins. “It really shows the character that he has to be able to delay his return home from the Olympics to save these dogs from a life on the streets.”
The reaction to Kenworthy’s decision to adopt these puppies has garnered more attention than the silver medal he claimed in his event.
Pop star Miley Cyrus took to Twitter to show her support, saying “4 reasons to follow @guskenworthy (<3 melts into 1,001 pieces)” followed by a picture of Kenworthy with the puppies.
These dogs were all strays that Kenworthy discovered near the media center at the base of the mountain that houses the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.
Sochi has had an increase in the amount of stray dogs, and this has risen even more during the Olympics.
The fact that Kenworthy stayed in Russia to wait for the adoption papers so that he could bring the five dogs one really shows the heart and love he has for all creatures on this Earth.
“It is so awesome that he adopted all those dogs,” said junior Skye Cain. “I think people should adopt before buying because when you adopt, you are saving ones that have been abandoned by their previous owners.”
The amount of attention given to Kenworthy will hopefully bring more attention to the problem that Sochi and many other places across the world have with the high population of stray animals.
