Changes have been made to the Career Action Planning process of signing up for next year’s courses for 2013-2014 juniors and seniors.
“Rising seniors (current juniors) will do all the same processes to register for courses, except have a CAP conference, unless: one, they and their parents request a conference, or two, if the student’s graduation is in jeopardy due to credit deficits,” said counselor Colleen Foster.
With this change, upcoming sophomores (current freshman) will have CAP conferences with HBHS staff. Central and Southwest junior high school teachers will be trained by high school staff as to what needs to be completed with current ninth grade students prior to CAP conference week. Students will receive course recommendations and complete the course registration. They will complete the course registration sheet at their junior high school to prepare for CAP conferences at Har-Ber.
“We’ve never had conferences with upcoming sophomores before; the junior high always handled it,” said AP English teacher Amy Johnson.
Some high school staff will work with ninth grade students and their parents during CAP conferences times. Staff will be able to review and discuss coursework for rising sophomores. Remaining teachers will advise HBHS students during CAP conferences.
“It’s less hassle and more efficient,” said junior Eli Machado.
Rising juniors and seniors will review their transcript and credit check. Students, their parents, and their CAP advisors will ensure their course recommendations and course selections meet the required credits for graduation.
“I like it better,” said junior Ashlyn Moore. “It’s just less stressful and it’s not as big of an ordeal as it normally would be.”
The change is intended to ease the transition into high school.
“Our HBHS goal is to welcome new students to Har-Ber, introduce them to faculty, let them tour our school and ask questions. This will decrease their level of social and academic anxiety while increasing their level of achievement as Har-Ber Wildcats,” said Mrs. Foster.
Another change that will be taking place is the CAP forms.
“Forms are going to be different this year. Instead of multiple forms, it’s going to be one sheet for recommendations and registrations. It’s going to prevent a lot of confusion,” said Mrs. Johnson.
CAP conferences will take place April 2 and 4 after school from 4:15-7:45 p.m. and April 5 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
