As senior Evan Payne prepares for Camp Cardboard which will be held April 5, he is very excited in hope that the event will spread awareness of homelessness in Springdale.
“I have never done this event before, but I am very excited,” said Payne.
National Honor Society is working to make sure that this event gets the publicity it needs to be a success. Overseeing aspects of publicity for Camp Cardboard is senior Liz Larsen.
“I am part of the group that deals with media involvement and getting publicity for the event,” said Larsen.
Nothing about this project is for selfish reasons. Not only is this event meant to publicize how prominent the issue of homelessness is, but all the money will also be going to the Samaritan House and Habitat for Humanity.
“I haven’t thought about what I would gain but more so what others would gain,” said senior Uniqia England.
Some of the other events there will be ultimate Frisbee, box decorating, and movies. Although there will be these fun events, they do not want the focus to stray from the seriousness of homelessness.
“We will also decorate boxes, but that is not our main focus,” said Payne.
Another thing that the National Honor Society would like to do at Camp Cardboard is to have a hand printwall where people can say what they want to say about homelessness and how it affects them.
“We will also probably have a handprint wall where people can say this is what I am going to do to prevent homelessness or raise awareness of it,” said England.
To the National Honor Society students homelessness is a very heartbreaking issue.
“When you think of homeless people obviously you feel sad because you take it for granted, and then you realize that there might be kids at your school that are homeless and this event is meant to raise awareness of that,” said Larsen.
