The lunchroom was buzzing with conversation, as talk of the new app Lulu gained momentum by the moment. Scrolling through Twitter, senior Ragan Huse’s eyes stopped on a particular tweet that caught her attention.
“My friend in college tweeted that ‘all girls seriously need to get the app Lulu’,” she said.
“Lulu” is a new app for the iPhone and Android that allows girls to rate guys based on a variety of factors like appearance, humor, manners, ambition, and commitment. After these initial factors are rated, girls then choose the guy’s best and worst traits and qualities, and the final condition is, only girls are allowed onto this app. Users log onto the app using their Facebook profile, so the app is able to determine gender.
“I think it’s funny that girls can say anything they want about guys, and guys are blocked from seeing it,” said senior Lucian Ek, sarcastically referring to the unfair restrictions of this new app.
While Ek feels that its restrictions are ridiculous, sophomore Xiomara Caldera feels that the app is scandalous.
“I feel like this new Lulu app is very stupid. [It’s] a way for girls to just talk smack or for boys to either get a big ego or be completely crushed with their results,” said Caldera.
The Lulu app can be entertaining for most girls, but if used incorrectly, it can influence and damage the first impression made by boys and girls. The app allows girls to see how a certain boy’s friends, crush, ex girlfriend, “hook up”, or relative view him and their thoughts on that boy.
“Girls can add false input and make a guy look really good or really bad,” said senior Peyton Squires.
