On his first day of high school, sophomore Kyle Shadowens looks at his schedule and sees the word “staff” next to his English 10 class. Like so many other students, Shadowens was put into an overflow class.
“It’s kind of strange being in an overflow class,” said Shadowens. “He’s not a real English teacher, but he’s a good teacher.”
AP World History, English 10, and English 12 are experiencing overflow classes, meaning that the school doesn’t have enough space and/or teachers for these classes.
“I took this job because I was here last year,” said overflow substitute Mr. Peterson.” I love the school and I think everyone should be able to prepare and not have to transfer in and out of classes.”
As of now, the school has hired substitutes to teach the English 10 classes in the library media center. The school can’t hire these substitutes because they may not be certified in the subject.
“I’m planning to apply for the position when it’s posted,” said Mr. Peterson.”I don’t have any advantage because I’m teaching it now.”
The AP World History overflow class has been given to AP World History and Ap Government teacer Mr. Wendel Nothdurft.
“I feel like it’s an opportunity to teach more kids,” said Mr. Nothdurft.
An English 12 overflow class has been given to German teacher Mrs. Frau Robinson while English 10 still remains without a certified teacher.
“It’s kinda frustrating being in an overflow class. Other people have a better chance at passing than me,” said junior Blair Breazeale.
