Many people go hungry everyday; however, members of the Future Farmers of America are trying to change that.
Canned foods were collected to donate to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank. They chose to donate to them because they take the food directly to the homes, not just to a food pantry.
“I enjoy helping those in need, especially since the economy is bad,” said junior Tyler Ross.
Every year the week before Thanksgiving break Ms. Patti Priest, FFA sponsor and agriculture teacher, and members of the FFA collect cans from around the school to donate. Last year they donated around 3,000 pounds.
Ms. Priest offers a prize to the teacher whose class collects the most cans. Last year Mr. John Stewart, who teaches AP US History, received a gift card for collecting the most cans and he would like to do the same this year.
“Winning means that we helped out people in need at a very important time or year,” said Mr. Stewart.
At the end of the canned food drive, Mr. Stewart’s classes were awarded the prize for collecting the most cans.
“Thank you to all who participated. We collected over 7,900 pounds of canned food. His classes collected 3,900 pounds of that,” Ms. Priest said.
