Break out the bows and the glitter, the football scene is about to get a makeover. That’s right, Powderpuff Football is back in all its sequin-studded glory. Hair will be pulled and mascara will run, but this year brings a new team to battle for the Championship title. In honor of the ten year anniversary, an alumni team has been created.
The team is being planned and organized by Courtney Walbe, and had yet began to practice in early September because it was so hard to get such a large amount of people together due to schedules.
“I know it’s been hard getting all the girls from past classes together, however, they are planning on winning,” said Ms. Biondo, who is in charge of organizing the Powderpuff Championship.
This year’s team roster includes Courtney Walbe, Kelsey Qualls, and Margarite Bowman Perry who graduated in 2007, Kristyne Pack Marveggion, 09’, Halee Castleman, and Susannah Burns, 10’, Katelyn Sizemore, Jessica Martin, and Chaney Wolfe, 11’, Jessica Olsen, 12’, Bethany Cameron, Ashley Gray, Anna Ward, and Dayday Ward, 13’.
The team was formed when Walbe was given the contact information of people who would be interested in playing for the alumni team. From there, the idea and information spread to others who wanted to play, and the team was born. Some members even played in previous Powderpuff Championships.
“My senior year of high school my team won the very first Powderpuff Championship,” said Halee Castlemen, who will be playing as a member of this year’s alumni team. Castlemen graduated in 2010 and is excited to play again and defend her title of Powderpuff Champion.
With the threat of an alumni team on top of an already tough competition, high school players like senior Emilie Layman are showing slight apprehension.
“I am a little intimidated but I think our team will put up a good fight,” said Layman, who is a member of the team “Back that pass up.” Layman’s team started practicing at the end of August and will be ready to play by the time of the Championship in October.
The alumni team seems to not fear losing to their competition, calling them too young. Only time, and the Championship, will tell if this lack of fear is beneficial to the alumni.
However, the high school teams think that they can take the alumni team on, but were met with the reply from Walbe, “Psh, no way!”
Depending on how this year goes, having an alumni team play in the Powderpuff Championship may become an annual tradition.
“I would like to play in the upcoming years. I haven’t played yet, but I think it will be fun,” said Walbe.
