Veteran’s Day is a day where Americans can honor and respect all of the veterans who signed a blank check to the United States.
The men and women who decide to put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms provided to the United States of America.
“Veteran’s Day, to me, is a day we forget about the war and just honor those who have given their lives and who have served and continue to serve,” said junior Hannah Yeomans.
Yeomans lost her uncle recently, who died fighting for his country.
“My uncle and I were extremely close. We kept in contact as much as possible when he was away. What happened to my uncle was a terrible thing. My view on war is that it’s bad, but to my uncle and parents, it’s doing something to help our country,” said Yeomans.
EAST held their annual Hour With A Hero assembly every period on Veterans Day, each period having a different veteran speak. Teachers were given the option to take their class every period, so most students got to go a couple of times.
Veteran’s Day is a day to set everything else aside and respect those who give their all.
“Veteran’s Day is a great holiday,” said junior Skye Cain. “The least the veterans deserve is a day dedicated to them.”
Many students have family or people they are close to that are serving or have served. For those students, Veteran’s Day is more than just a day to think about the United States’ servicemen and women. It’s a day to remember and respect all that has been given for this country.
“Veteran’s Day means a lot to me because most of my family is military based,” said senior Tyler Horstman. “My grandpa, cousins, and uncles were all a part of the military, so I have the utmost respect for them.”
The assembly caused many to feel a sense of pride and respect for the United States and the military. It gave off a sense of nationalism and made some want to enlist in one of the several branches of the military.
“The assemblies just made me feel like I should join the military even more,” said Horstman. “I love feeling like I am a part of something, and that’s probably why I loved football so much. The assembly made me want to go out and honor my country and keep it free from all harm.”
