Junior Yuan Fei Zhang moved from Hsien, China to the United States when he was ten years old. For most kids moving would be a nightmare, but moving to a whole new country would be unthinkable.
“It was a lot different. I had to adjust to the fact that there were more students in my classes, the grading systems and requirements were different, and Chinese isn’t the main language anymore,” said Zhang.
Zhang does not shy away from challenging himself; he is involved in many clubs and Advance Placement classes (AP). As a sophomore Zhang scored a five on the AP Calculus AB test.
“I’m taking five AP classes this year, which include AP Calculus BC, AP Physics , AP Chemistry, AP World, and AP Lit,” said Zhan. “I take so many because it helps me get lots of college credit, and I like to be challenged.”
Zhang plans on graduating with a grade point average of 4.0 and also plans on finishing with 11 AP classes in hopes of being at the top of his class. After high school Zhang plans to attend Harvard University and pursue the medical field.
“I want to be a doctor or surgeon. I haven’t really decided yet,” said Zhang.
Not only does Zhang take AP classes and participate in clubs, but he also volunteers outside of school at the Northwest Medical Center.
“It helps me learn more and I get more experience from the community,” said Zhang “And since I want to be a doctor, I get to learn how doctors function and how to treat patients, and just help the community.”
Having recently taken the SAT and ACT, Zhang is eagerly awaiting his results. With so many AP classes, volunteer hours, and a high standard of excellence, it’s fair to assume that Zhang has a bright future ahead of him.
