Twenty years ago library media specialist Tresa Hardage, who was working as a geography teacher, met John Dixon at a National Geographic event with no indication of a possible romance. However, two years ago the pair was reintroduced and is set to be married April 27. What is slightly uncommon about this serendipitous betrothal is the fact that both parties are over the age of 50 and a first for Ms. Hardage.
“Marrying later in life gives you a more realistic view about what a relationship gives you and what you can bring to it,” said Ms. Hardage.
The pair shares an ardent passion for travel. This shared interest was reflected in their engagement. On the evening of Dixon’s 60th birthday, the couple was in Paris, France enjoying dinner on the Seine River while gazing at the Notre Dame Cathedral. This blissfully romantic scenario provided the ideal ambiance for Dixon to propose.
The couple also shares an interest in geology. This knowledge base is illustrated by the engagement ring Dixon selected to represent his commitment. The ring possesses a garnet which signifies loyalty, friendship, and long-term relationship. The style of the ring also reflects Ms. Hardage’s love for the Renaissance era.
Dixon is a professor of geomorphology at the University of Arkansas and is indigenous to Australia. Close friend and colleague of Ms. Hardage ESL instructor Cynthia Edwards feels that he is perfectly suited to enter a union with Ms. Hardage.
“I am ecstatic. All of her friend group and colleagues are excited for her to have a companion,” said Ms. Edwards.
Ms. Hardage is similarly thrilled by the idea of marrying Dixon. The wedding will be highly family centric. Dixon’s family will be flying in from his place of origin, while Ms. Hardage’s extensive list of nieces and nephews will participate in the ceremony. The event will take place at the site of Ms. Hardage’s annual family reunion, a park in the Ouachita Forrest.
Ms. Hardage’s beautiful romance provides evidence that fairy tale scenarios do exist within the real world and provides hope to individuals not experiencing the mythological instant gratification as they attempt to find a partner for life.
“I am very happy and very much in love, experiencing lots of different emotions that are mostly wonderful. I am 57 years old, so anyone can find love. There is no age limit on love,” she said.
