Walking down the hallways on Wednesdays, blue and pink shirts have been spotted being worn routinely by teachers and staff. These “Team Mayfield” shirts have been worn in support of one of the school attendance secretaries, Montie Mayfield, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.
“The school and staff have supported me through encouragement, prayer, and the Team Mayfield shirts,” said Mrs. Mayfield. “It has been very humbling.”
Mrs. Mayfield has not been working in the attendance office this year due to her treatment. She has recently returned to work after finishing treatment on August 3, and after three surgeries, she has finally beat her cancer.
“I feel really good,” said Mrs. Mayfield. “I’m almost back to normal.”
Other members of staff, like attendance secretary Julie Rutledge, are excited to have Mrs. Mayfield back.
“It’s wonderful,” said Mrs. Rutledge. “I supported her by praying for her, wearing our shirts on Wednesday, and I called to check up on her.”
Returning to a job after a break may be tough, but Mrs. Mayfield is adjusting wonderfully.
“It’s pretty much the same,” said Mrs. Mayfield. “I’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff and to lighten up.”
Mrs. Mayfield’s biggest supporters throughout this process have been her family.
“They have been there every step of the way,” said Mrs. Mayfield. “The most important way they’ve supported me is by going to treatments with me.”
Through the support of her family and the staff at school, Mrs. Mayfield has successfully defeated cancer and returned to work.
“It is a blessing to have your health back and to work and to have a purpose,” said Mrs. Mayfield.
