As the holiday season approaches and seasonal volunteer opportunities open up, it is important to recognize the individuals who volunteer as a year-long affair. Among these students are junior Fei Zhang and senior Emily Schaffner. Zhang dedicates his time to the Northwest Medical Center while Schaffner gives her time to the Elm Springs United Methodist Church youth group.
Zhang’s service at the hospital began the summer proceeding his freshman year. His obligations include cleaning, assisting nurses, and stocking rooms. His motivation for his dedication is his plan to pursue a career in the medical realm.
The opportunity allows him to consult with doctors and learn through observation. It also fosters a sense of self-awareness as he is constantly exposed to the inevitable end of life.
“I generally just try to do at least do something. If you are going to work, be active and do not slack off,” said Zhang.
Schaffner participates in various volunteer events with her youth group where she holds a leadership position as she is the oldest member. She is currently in the midst of planning the group’s summer mission trip. Her most recent endeavor involved feeding the homeless in partnership with Wesley Church. Schaffner enjoys the interaction involved with helping others.
“It shows you what other people are going through, it helps me to see that I am fortunate, and it helped me to be thankful for what I have,” said Schaffner.
