Sitting on his school bus at a perfect distance between the two southern exits of the school, bus driver and lunch monitor Rocky Lusher waits for someone to enter or exit the school. Lusher is one of two people who patrol the north and south parking lots to prevent any unauthorized people entering or exiting the building.
“I believe this will further education. It’s an incentive to stay inside,” said Lusher.
Bill Custodio patrols the north parking lot by the gym, and Lusher patrols the south parking lot by the Performing Arts Center. Both monitor these areas from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during the school week.
“I’m trying to help truancy control and security during lunch,” said Custodio.
Lusher and Custodio were both already employed by Springdale Schools before receiving this job. They are bus drivers when they are not keeping the school safe.
Lusher and Custodio catch students as they go to their cars during their patrol hours. Lusher catches about three people a day while Custodio catches anywhere from five at the beginning of the week to 20 during activity days.
“Everyone’s been very cooperative,” said Cutodio. ” It’s been a good experience.”
When the weather starts getting colder, Lusher believes that he will start patrolling inside the south side of the school. Custodio believes that he will still be outside, but sitting in a car instead of standing outside. Either way they will continue patrolling the school.
“I think it’s going to benefit the school. It’s not to give anyone a hard time. It’s to keep extra eyes outside the school for security,” said Custodio.
