Dr. Kate Williams served as the lead veterinarian during the Future Farmer’s of America’s dog washing benefit Oct. 6. Proceeds from the benefit will assist the veterinary science team to raise funds to compete at the national competition.
“We raised $1,100, which was plenty of money for them to get to attend,” said FFA sponsor Patti Priest.
In preparation for the event, FFA students sold tickets and hung up fliers. The students were also required to attend two training sessions at Saint Francis Animal Hospital in order to learn how to properly restrain a dog. Over thirty FFA members and staff at Saint Francis facilitated the event.
At the benefit canine clients received nail maintenance, an optional hair trim, a bath, and coat grooming. The cost per dog was $10.
“I felt so bad for Dr. Williams and the students because it took three people to hold down my dog Lucy just to clip her toe nails,” said English teacher Karla Sprague. “My other dog Ribbi did not like the blow dryers at all.”
The dogs were also given personalized bandanas that announced their participation at the benefit.
“Braden enjoyed helping with the dogs and getting to personalize the bandanas for Lucy and Ribbi,” Mrs. Sprague said.
“I really enjoyed the dog wash. It was tons of fun. We had many dogs show up,” said junior Abby Sizemore.
As a result of the upbeat event, the veterinary science team will be able to compete in their national competition at the end of October.
