Mrs. Libby Smith’s parenting classes recently got to experience what it feels like to be parents. Each student was assigned to take care of a boiled egg, his or her baby, through a project known as the Egg Baby Project.
For four days the boiled egg was the student’s life. If you go to school, you took it along. Go to work, the egg goes with you. And the project went even as far as if you went to the restroom and you couldn’t take the egg baby along, you had to get a trustworthy babysitter.
“I really enjoyed this project. I learned how delicate an infant is and how to properly deal with them,” said junior Dakota Abram.
The students were required to keep a journal in which they were supposed to keep track of the egg baby and the events that were occurring.
“This project gave us a little taste of the responsibility of always being in charge of something. I also learned that you can’t take your eyes off the egg baby because something could happen in an instant,” said senior Blair Ceola.
The students were excepted to boil an egg and keep it stored safely, wrapped in cotton or hay. They were expected to decorate the egg and handle it carefully, treating it like an infant.
“I really enjoyed this class this year. I like learning about children and how to deal with them. I want to be a good father one day,” said Abram.
If the students were to crack the egg, then they were deducted points. If the egg was completely cracked the student was required to give a eulogy and present it in front of the class.
“The project was not too difficult or too easy. I had a great experience. I really love kids and I may take up a career dealing with kids, so I figured parenting would be a fun beneficial class to take,” said Ceola.
“This project was for the kids, to let them pretend that they were parents and let them realize the responsibilities that come along with being a parent,” said Mrs. Smith.
