In the aftermath of Oscar night, many are questioning Seth MacFarlane’s controversial comedic hosting. While some found that he shined bright like a diamond, others went to sleep feeling insulted with their laugh boxes still dormant. For me, his subtle humor and charm were in perfect harmony that night, not to mention his wonderful singing voice.
MacFarlane started the show with a few good jabs, one on Ben Affleck’s Best Director snub for “Argo”, and another about “Django Unchained” being “loosely based on Mel Gibson’s voice mails.” While poking fun at Daniel Day Lewis and his performance in “Lincoln”, he joked, “I would argue, however, that the actor who really got inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth.” This joke stunned the crowd, not gaining many laughs for the comedian.
While the joke was a bit much, and I felt bad for laughing, I still found myself chuckling. Because in the end, MacFarlane was simply poking fun and taking jabs at the world.
Moving on, he went on to perform a little ditty titled “We Saw Your Boobs,” which gained the audiences laughs. This humorous song talked of famous actresses and the movies in which they took off their tops. As soon as MacFarlane ended the song (singing with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles), Twitter exploded with hateful tweets, griping about how he was putting these prestigious women down and blah blah blah. These actresses’ reactions during the song were actually pre-recorded, as they were wearing different dresses in the clips than they were during the Oscar show. So these ladies were in on the joke and had given their approval.
Later on, Ted, MacFarlane’s uncensored teddy bear character, came out with fellow actor Mark Wahlberg, and the two preceded to talk about being of the Jewish faith. This small scripted part really had the community up in arms, with many people becoming tremendously offended by this short exchange.
Overall, I absolutely loved MacFarlane as an Oscar host, and I wish that he would agree to do it again, but alas, he refused. While many of his jokes were somewhat too much at some times, in the end they were just that. Jokes. I found him extremely hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoyed his hosting. We live in a society filled of overly sensitive people who get upset over the most miniscule things. These people need to take a few deep breaths and remember how to laugh.
