Solange Knowles’ debut album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams can only be described as a fantastical blend of modern pop and Motown inspired Soul. With the very first track “God Given Name,” Solange transports the listener to a world of her own creation with airy narrative vocals and a mystical mellow melody. This captivating first song sets the tone for the dreamy musical experience ahead.
Stand out tracks on the album include”T.O.N.Y”.,” Dancing In The Dark”, “Would’ve Been The One”, and “Sandcastle Disco”. All of the mentioned tunes feature energetic beats and powerful vocals. Also, throughout the album Solange does an excellent job of conveying to the reader authentic and relatable emotions.
There only seemed to be two issues with this album. One being a handful of songs that have the potential to easily lose the listener’s attention and would have a difficult time thriving without the accompanying tracks. The other being contradictory lyrics. Most songs blatantly profess the artists’ spunk and independence while others hint at her fragile state and dependency on the opposite sex.
However, this problem can be easily overlooked because in reality the human mind is filled with incongruous feelings.
Overall this album is pieced together beautifully, creates a memorable journey for the listener, and leaves them yearning for more. It would make a fabulous addition to any music collection.
