The story of a happy drunk finding his own true love has been retold in the new movie “Arthur,” starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, and Jennifer Garner. The original “Arthur” was released in 1981 and was a smash hit in its day.
The new “Arthur” is full of laughs and great comedy. Brand plays Arthur Bach, an heir of his mother’s company and the owner of a wealthy inheritance. He refuses to give up his life of play and find a job. When his drinking and childish actions threaten his mother’s company, Arthur’s mother takes action and threatens to take away his money. At one point in the film, Arthur is so drunk he causes his chauffeur to crash the Batmobile and is arrested.
Arthur’s mother forces him to propose to Susan, her assistant, who she hopes will force Arthur into becoming an adult. Arthur agrees with his mother and proposes to Susan at the risk of losing his money. One day, when Arthur visits Grand Central Station for the first time, he runs into Naomi Quinn, an unfortunate girl who is often caught by police for giving illegal tours. When Arthur meets her, minutes later she is running from the police. After the police catch her, Arthur talks the officers out of arresting Naomi. Naomi later becomes Arthur’s true love, a girl of whom Arthur’s family despises because of her background and small salary. His closest relationship is not with his mother but his nanny, Hobson, who advises him and has taken care of him since he was an infant.
This film is definitely a romantic comedy and is great for a group of teenagers looking for a laugh.
