Blue Crew

Junior Jackson Nichols stands at the center of the Wildcat Arena surrounded by a crowd of roaring students. The students chant, cheer, and celebrate by the lead of Nichols. The bleachers echo the sounds of hundreds of students stomping their feet. Students sporting elaborate red, white, and blue outfits decorate the crowd. Flags and signs wave up and down, carried by the wind of Wildcat spirit. The alma mater bounces off the walls of the arena filling the heart of each individual student.

“Blue Crew is for everyone, not just seniors, and we wish more sophomores would join,” Nichols said.

The new Blue Crew club is just getting its start at Har-Ber this year. Blue Crew was created in order to build school pride, start school traditions, and get all students involved.

“It’s like a step up from student council. It’s more involvement with games and students than just certain events,” Blue Crew leader senior Serena Mcclarrinon said.

Blue Crew helps with events like pep rallies and spirit days. The main job of a member is to take part in school activities and encourage other students to do so, too.

“I think that school culture drives everything. It determines how excited kids are about coming to school, how involved they are, if they participate and come to events. It plays a part in test scores. If kids care, they take pride in their school,” Laurie Jennings, Blue Crew sponsor, said.

In the few months that it’s been around, Blue Crew has already had a largely positive impact on its members.

“I enjoy having a say in what we get to do at football games and stuff,” senior Jake Lance said.

Although it’s still in the startup stage, Blue Crew has several traditions it’s hoping to start. Those include things like a new run-out tradition for when teams take the field, certain claps and chants, first day of school being half pep rally and half meetings, and teaching the student section band dances, according to Jennings.

“I think that it starts with them this year to prove that we can have fun and still be classy. If we do a good job, traditions will stick,” Jennings said.

Blue Crew’s success depends on the spirit of the members but the current members have enough spirit to pass on for years to come.

“Blue crew is the blood and the veins of Har-Ber High School #bleedblue,” Lance said.
