Hoco assembly

Standing at the podium in front of the entire student body, teachers, and parents, Student Council President and senior Serena McClarrinon announces each of the homecoming maids. She looks out over the arena, which has transformed overnight from a basketball court to a walkway fit for a queen.

“There will be around 35 people helping set up, and we try to get done as soon as we can, but we’ll probably be at school late. I’m hoping that everyone knows what their job needs to be Thursday night and they get in and do it so that we can get out before 11:30,” McClarrinon said.

Student Council prepared in advance so that the setting up process would run smoothly. They made sure to check their supplies in advance to avoid setbacks and speed along Thursday night.

“Usually, we run into problems the night before, but we’ve done things ahead of time so that doesn’t happen this year,” McClarrinon said. “We sorted out all the lights in our closet and the tools so we know how much we need.”

The assembly will have a few minor changes from previous years’ assemblies. Student Council tried to cater more to the maids and their families.

“Our plan right now is to seat the maids’ parents on the ground next to the walkway so that it’ll focus in more on the maids. This is important; it’s a privilege to be a maid, and your peers choose you for that,” McClarrinon said.

Along with the introductions and celebrations of the maids, the Lighthouse choir, an a cappella group of students and a crowd favorite, will sing as they do annually.

“We are doing a piece together called Take Me Home by Pentatonix, then the girls and guys will do separate pieces. The guys are doing Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble, and the girls are doing Celebrate by Ingrid Michaelson,” senior member Abby Jackson said.

After the performance from Lighthouse and the walking of the maids, the guest speaker will give a speech. This year’s speaker is Mrs. Stephanie Anderson, the principal of Helen Tyson Middle School.

“We have asked many of our feeder school principals to speak at former Homecoming assemblies,” principal Nichole Davis said.

Overall, Student Council and Lighthouse have put in a great amount of effort to make sure that this year’s assembly goes as planned.

“Hopefully the assembly is going to be better than last year,” McClarrinon said.
