Fashion icon, singer, songwriter, record producer, painter, and actor. All of these things and more encompass David Robert Jones, better known by his stage name “David Bowie.” After an undisclosed 18-month battle with liver cancer, Bowie died on January 10th at the age of 69. He died just two days after the release of his new album, Blackstar. His impact spans across both the music industry and the fashion industry, bringing a multitude of people together to pay tribute to his life and achievements.

Bowie’s greatest impact during his lifetime was on the music industry- inspiring artists throughout generations to be bold and express themselves through their music. Following Bowie’s death, artists from numerous different music styles posted tributes to him. Kanye West recently posted his tribute on Twitter, as well as Ozzy Osbourne on Rolling Stone.

“David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations. So fearless, so creative. He gave us magic for a lifetime,” tweeted West.

Bowie’s producer, Tony Visconti, was also one of the largest influences on his musical and creative style.

“His death was no different from his life- a work of art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us,” said Visconti.

Bowie may have been a big name in music, but he also left a monumental legacy on the world of fashion. With fashion tributes from Vogue and Rolling Stone, it is clear that Bowie was far more than just a musical icon.

“As tributes flood the media, the fashion world mourns the man whose shape-shifting style inspired the hopes, dreams, and dressing-up courage of generations of teenagers,” wrote Vogue.

Senior Peyton Stewman has been a fan of David Bowie ever since she heard his song “Heroes” on the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

“Bowie’s work has impacted the world; I understood what a great loss it was. His impact on future generations depends on those that believe in his work,” said Stewman.
