On Oct. 9, the Powderpuff Championship took place during activity period on the new field. The teams competing were basketball, named Kick Sass, and soccer, the AK’s. The basketball team walked away triumphant, winning 18-2.
Despite having only practiced two times, the basketball team and their coaches expected them to win. Their coaches were Carter McDonald, Martin Escareno, Eduardo Flores, Chris Sandoval, and Mark Daraphone.
“They are very athletic girls, I expected them to win,” said Martin Escareno.
During the Tournament, Kick Sass lost every game but one, the game that landed them in the championship against soccer. They won by two touchdowns, an interception, and an extra point during the final championship.
Unlike basketball, soccer was committed to the game, practicing once a week since about the second week of Sept. Their coaches were Andrew Lisle and Austin Henderson.
“I knew it was going to be a fair game because the basketball girls are very athletic too,” said senior Lydia Patton.
Patton played for the soccer team last year in the Powderpuff Tournament, which they won. She revealed that the loss of beneficial seniors was one of the reasons they lost this year.
“Also, the basketball girls were not in the tournament last year,” said Patton.
During their two practices, basketball did not create plays, they were focused on having fun.
“We just tried to think of it as something more fun than competitive,” said senior Carlye Bohannon.
While playing against soccer in the Championship, basketball maintained this carefree attitude.
“We just threw it where it was open,” said senior Anna Frances Chancellor.
Bohannon played in the tournament her sophomore year as well, and revealed that one of the main differences this year was playing the Alumni team, one of the teams they lost to.
“They kicked our butt,” said Bohannon.
Despite losing multiple times in the tournament, basketball’s coaches had complete faith in them, especially after witnessing how the Championship game was turning out to be in their favor.
“We kinda knew we had them,” said Escareno of the Championship game.
