On the weekend of January 17-18, the wrestling team, who was coming off a 5-0 winning streak, played in East Kansas and finished tournament with a 30-29 win in their last dual.
Senior Coltin Morgan said,” We go to a lot of out of state competitions not really looking to win, but to get a little better everyday. It’s not competition we haven’t seen before, but if you go and wrestle hard you can compete with a lot of good people and teams so we get a chance to win every tournament we go to, we are lucky it worked in our favor in Kansas.”
In addition to the 30-29 win Morgan said, “We had a lot of guys that were not wrestling smart. They were just giving up points at the end of the match. We had two games that came down to the finals seconds that we lost, which ended up being a 15 point swing, so we gotta be able to wrestle the full six minutes, so it isn’t such a close game.”
On the Jan. 18 Gentry and Berryville were beat 72-9 and 68-1, leaving Har-Ber victorious both games.
“We knew the team wasn’t very good, but you always have to stay humble because anybody can be beat any day,” said sophomore Matt Seiter about their wins. “You have to improve every match, but something specific would be positioning,” he said.
The wrestling team will be hosting an important dual on the Jan. 27 against Rogers and Heritage. When asked about next weeks games and how it would affect the confidence of the players if they won Seiter said, ”Winning will definitely boost everyone’s confidence. It’s against one of our biggest competitions in the state. If we can beat them, then we are set to do pretty well in state.”
Facing the Wildcats in a conference dual that will prepare them for state comes when Rogers and Heritage roll into Wildcat Arena.
“This is a big one I know for me personally. We actually beat Heritage at a tournament at Har-Ber, and there was a lot of talk going on between both teams, so it was a big deal. They are probably our biggest competition along with Rogers. Going in there and winning those duals would solidify us as top contender right now, and it’s huge to be able to beat somebody like that in your conference,” Morgan said.
