Signs at Games

Sydney Moore, Social Media Director

The feeling of excitement floods my senses as I walk through the gate to the game. The student section has not quite filled up yet, but I can already predict that the crowd will be large. I look around, noticing the signs in the hands of the fans. They range from clever ridicule of the other team to positive encouragement for our own team. I see that some kids are gathered around one sign in particular.

When I finally get a glimpse of the sign I am filled with annoyance. It advocates for topics that are inconsequential to football. Some of the slogans are so ignorant that the stupidity is laughable.

If the signs don’t relate to the sport being played, then don’t bring them. If you do bring them then you are wasting my time and yours. Clever signs are all in good fun, which is totally acceptable. However, when some kid wants to be funny and makes an idiotic sign, it ends up making them look stupid.

If your sign is in some way making fun or degrading a social issue, do me and everyone around you a favor and leave it at the gate. Better yet don’t even make it. I am in no way opposed to signs and don’t get me wrong, people have the right to say what they want. However if you know that it is a touchy subject and you know that you’re going to get into trouble, why would you bring it?

If a person is going to be ignorant about what they say in public, stay silent. If you have any doubt at all that your sign is inappropriate just don’t bring it. Another aspect is that if the crowd supports these degrading signs, the people who made the sign are going to think that it is acceptable. It’s not, so for the sake of my highschool experience, and others’, don’t be stupid about your signs. I love being able to laugh about signs and talk about how someone came up with the ideas but I hate seeing the idiotic ones as well.
