On Jan. 29 all sophomores and juniors were led to the Performing Arts Center to learn about small learning communities and the new online course selection process. Meanwhile, all the ,stayed in their third period class and wondered why they did not get this opportunity. Through the Home Access Center is the new way to choose your classes for the next school year. With this program things will be a little different than before.
Course Action Planning (CAP) books are available online, and students will still receive course selection sheets. However, classes available for each grade level will be listed and selected online by the student. Everything will be on the computer.
In addition to regular classes, students will have houses or communities, SLCs. For example, all the medical classes are in the MEDs community. Every student will have an advisor, who will know their interests and know what classes will be right for them to take. Each third period teacher will be your advisor. With this new HAC program, students will be able to keep up with credits easier, be better prepared for college, and have easy access to your transcript.
Like every new program out there, there will be some glitches at first. With time, everyone will get used to it. Since it will be on E-school, it will all be done at school with your advisor. Logging in 30+ students in a class at a time may overwhelm the building’s internet and present a challenge. A downside to the SLCs is that you will only be able to switch once. Other than a few disadvantages, these changes seems like a great idea.
Overall this seems like a great way to sign up for classes and get schedules prepared for the next school year. Student will be signing up for classes and communities Feb. 23-27. Since they will be choosing early, it’s very likely they will be receiving their schedules ahead of time instead of on the first day of school. Other positive outcomes of this will be that teachers might be hired ahead of time and classes may be prepared for the first day of school. I feel like this is a great way to better prepare the upcoming school year. It is not going to benefit current seniors, but it really will help out upcoming seniors, juniors, and especially sophomores.
